It took me losing everything to realize that I’ve always had access to everything I needed.
I will never forget the day I went to donate plasma because I was trying to save my car from being repossessed. The line wrapped around the building and although I never thought I was better than anyone, in my soul I knew I did not belong in that line.
I felt like I had hit rock bottom.
I was on the verge of losing my car, I couldn’t afford to pay my rent, and I had no idea that my lights were going to be shut off that next week.
I remember lying across my bed crying because things just kept getting worse, and I had no idea how they were going to get better.
Have you ever been there where if it’s not one thing it’s another?
I didn’t know it then, but it was my mindset that had me stuck in a cycle of financial struggle and making poor decisions.
When I began to change the way I thought, my whole life began to change.
That is why I wanted to first help you acknowledge if you have a poverty mindset, because we can’t change something that we refuse to acknowledge.
There are numerous signs that you may have a poverty mindset, but the ones that I think are most common are that you feel the need to compete with others, you believe there’s no room in the world for your gifts, and you often use the words “I can’t afford to…”
I can relate because my life used to exhibit all of those signs and now that I am free from having a poverty mindset, I want to help you get free as well. So here goes…
1. There is enough for everyone – Most of the times we find ourselves competing with others is because we believe there aren’t enough resources, finances, etc. to go around and so we believe that we have to be better than others so that we will get the “prize” and so we don’t miss out. But God has promised us that He will supply ALL of our needs according to His riches in glory. What God has for you is for you and you never have to worry about someone else getting it- as long as you’re moving in obedience and doing the things you’re supposed to be doing.
2. There’s room for everyone – It can be easy to look at this world and say there are already many authors out there, there’s no room for my book or there are already so many singers out there, who’s going to listen to my album. The crazy thing is the world is full of doctors and lawyers, yet that doesn’t seem to stop enrollment in medical and law school. Why is it that when it comes to “creative” gifts, many people seem to feel like there’s no room in the world for what they have to offer. Unlike doctors and lawyers who go to school and learn skills, when it comes to books, music, and other “creative” gifts, no one has experienced things in the way you have. God will give a person a creative idea or a song in their dreams, and God does not create clones so what He has given you, it will not be done unless you do it. Your books will reach people I could never reach and vice versa. God gave us the gifts He gave us for a reason. He knew there was room for everyone.
3. You have everything you need– “I can’t afford to…” used to roll out of my mouth so naturally. I had become so conditioned to looking at what was in my hands, that I failed to realize that more times than not I was always leaving God out of the equation. This is where I really saw the scripture about life and death being in the power of my tongue. I was constantly speaking death over my finances and my future. It really did take me losing everything to step back and see how I was never going to prosper because I didn’t believe I could, and I was too reliant on myself. The Bible is full of scriptures about what is available to us and one in particular is how God has given us the ability to produce wealth. The next time you form your mouth to say “I can’t afford to…” I want you to remember you have a God-given ability to produce wealth. Of course, wealth isn’t something you produce in a moment, it is a process. I don’t care if it’s your bills, going back to school, starting a business, or taking your family on vacation; you can afford it. You just have to ask God what your process looks like. You also have to be a good steward over what you already have.
Shifting from a poverty mindset to an abundance mindset will be one of the greatest gamechangers of your life, but I’m going to be honest it’s not the easiest process. It takes time, patience, perseverance, and a lot of walking by faith.
But I promise you, if you don’t give up it will be so worth it.
I would love to come alongside you in this process. Shoot me an email at Krystal@bouncebackclub.org and let me know which one of the three signs you struggled with and one way you plan to move forward.
